Donna Eden, a pioneer in energy medicine (EEM/The Eden Method), has gifted the world with simple yet powerful techniques to balance the body’s energy systems.
One of the essential tools in her Daily Energy Routine (DER) is the “Four Thumps.” Among these thumps, the Stomach Thump holds a unique role in grounding and stabilising our energy.
Grounding—the process of connecting to the earth’s energy—is essential for physical and emotional health. When our energy is scattered, we may feel disconnected, anxious, or unbalanced. The Stomach meridian’s pathway, which integrates the upper and lower parts of the body, acts as a bridge that stabilises and anchors energy. By activating this meridian, the Stomach Thump facilitates a harmonious connection between body and mind.
The Stomach Thump focuses on stimulating the Stomach meridian, a vital energy pathway in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). This meridian begins just beneath the eyes, travels down the torso, and ends at the second toe. Here is a short video demonstrating the pathway:
By engaging this meridian, the Stomach Thump helps anchor the body’s energy, promoting a sense of grounding and connection to the earth.
For your interest, here is a short 4 minute video I did a few years ago describing the route of the Stomach meridian on the face specifically:
DIAGRAM - With grateful thanks to Deadman Manual of Acupuncture – an invaluable and respected resource.
If it’s too uncomfortable to ‘thump’ or ‘tap’ Stomach 1 (located about a thumb width under the eye – see diagram), just drop down a bit to Stomach 2 or even on the apex of the cheeks – experiment. We are not using needles, so there is ‘wiggle room’.
If you have any eye issues or are wearing contact lenses – be gentle.
ST1 is directly related to the eyes and is a major point for vision problems.
It is called RECEIVE TEARS. It can help us let go of tears we have held in.
Lonny Jarrett: “Empowers the processing of undigested emotional material”. “reinstate the balanced flow of stomach energy so we are at once nourished by the fruits of our efforts and cleansed of past sorrow”
ST2 (FOUR WHITES) addresses both eyes and facial issues, with a broader range of effects on the facial region.
When using in the 4 Thumps context, the GENTLE tapping stimulates the flow of energy DOWN to the 2nd toe (the end of Stomach meridian) and activates a strong ‘yang’ grounding capability.
Being grounded is essential for our energetic health: it’s a two way motorway enabling old stale energies to DISCHARGE into the earth and for new, nurturing Yin energy to enter our bodies for healing and harmony.
This two way circuit also enables us to be an efficient conduit of energy between ‘Heaven and Earth’.
Why is grounding so important?
It’s important enough that I’ve created an online class on it! THE BAREFOOT REVOLUTION
But for now, here are a few general key benefits:
· The Earth has a negative electrical charge due to its abundant free electrons. When the body comes into direct contact with the Earth, it's a perfect electromagnetic connection, it can absorb these electrons, which help:
Neutralise excess positive charges caused by free radicals and restore the body’s natural electrical state, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. Chronic inflammation is linked to many health issues, including arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and autoimmune disorders.
Grounding can help regulate the body’s circadian rhythm, aligning it with the Earth’s natural frequencies. The benefits for sleep include:
o Decreasing cortisol levels (stress hormone), which interfere with restful sleep.
o Promoting relaxation and reducing symptoms of insomnia.
TIP – Try and expose yourself to natural daylight in the first ten minutes when you get up. I try and sit in the garden, with bare feet on the ground – weather allowing. Enhances cortisol levels even more.

Physical contact with the Earth can have a calming effect on the nervous system by:
o Activating the parasympathetic nervous system (responsible for rest and relaxation).
o Lowering stress hormones, such as cortisol, and increasing endorphins.
Studies suggest that grounding may improve white blood cell function and overall immune response.
The flow of electrons from the Earth can improve cellular function and energy production, leaving individuals feeling more energetic and balanced.
Reduce blood viscosity, which is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
Improve blood flow and circulation by enhancing the electrical charge of red blood cells, preventing clumping.
Grounding acts as a natural shield by discharging the body's accumulated electrical charge and reducing the effects of EMF exposure.
Grounding promotes a sense of connectedness with Nature, which has been shown to:
Enhance mood and reduce symptoms of depression.
Improve mental clarity and focus.
So, why not make Nature your personal medicine and ….
Walk Barefoot: On grass, soil, sand, or even concrete (not asphalt).
Water Exposure: Swim in natural water bodies or immerse your feet in streams or lakes.
Gardening: Engage in activities where your hands come into contact with soil.
The Stomach Thump is the first of Donna Eden’s 4 thumps but can also be done anytime you feel:
Overwhelmed or ungrounded.
Disconnected from your surroundings.
Fatigued or lacking vitality.
Emotionally unsettled or anxious.
In need of focus and presence.
It’s particularly beneficial before or after activities that challenge your energy system, such as traveling, intense work, or emotionally charged situations. I use it a lot after air travel, when I want to ground into a new time zone.
How to Perform the Stomach Thump
Locate the Points: Find the Stomach-1 points (under both eyes) and explore area to ensure it feels comfortable. Remember, be careful if you have contact lenses or any eye issues.
Apply Gentle Pressure: Place your fingertip on these points and tap firmly but gently. You can use both hands simultaneously or alternate between them. I use my middle fingers, which have a gentle Yin – Heart Protector- energy that is more easily accepted by the body on this delicate area.
Breathe Deeply: As you tap, take slow, deep breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth. Visualize your energy stabilizing and flowing smoothly.
Smile: will release endorphins and enhance the tapping.
Duration: Continue tapping for about 15-30 seconds or until you feel a shift in your energy, such as a sense of calm or clarity.
The Benefits of the Stomach Thump
As I’ve already highlighted, the Stomach Thump is a powerhouse for grounding and energy alignment. It also ….
Emotional Balance: The Stomach meridian is closely linked to the digestive system, both physically and emotionally. Tapping these points can help alleviate feelings of worry, overthinking, and anxiety.
Improved Digestion: Activating the Stomach meridian may support physical digestion by optimizing energy flow to the digestive organs.
Enhanced Focus and Clarity: Grounding energy improves concentration, making this an excellent tool for moments when you need mental sharpness.
Energy Boost: The rhythmic tapping revitalizes your energy, combating fatigue and lethargy.
So why not stop reading, and with your middle fingers gently tap the Stomach points, smile, breath and perhaps be the voice of the Goddess and make a positive statement, such as:
My stomach energy flows strong and free, grounding me into the nourishment of Earth – discharging and recharging with a joyfulness and earthiness that feels so good!
